Why is roy harper called speedy

Her powers are subsequently awakened after being tested metagene-positive. Oliver bests Diggle in their fight, and pulls a sword on him. But before he can kill Diggle, Thea appears and shoots Oliver with an Arrow. The man he until recently considered a brother had kidnapped his wife and left his daughter alone. Roy is an experienced hand-to-hand combatant, his fighting style a mixture of acrobatics and street brawling.

He is also very intuitive in finding weaknesses in how his opponents approach a fight. Along with regular arrows, Roy at times employs a range of high-tech trick arrows that he himself has engineered. These may include gas arrows, explosive arrows, net arrows and boomerang arrows. While raising Lian, Roy joined the Central Bureau of Intelligence, then transferred to the government agency Checkmate before leaving to become a Super Hero again.

Roy also formed an incarnation of the Outsiders and briefly served in the Justice League under the name Red Arrow. Later in his life, he lost an arm in battle with the villain Prometheus, who, along with the villain Eletrocutioner, then destroyed Star City and killed Lian in the process. In the show, Oliver Queen calls Roy by the name, Speedy once or twice, but ever since the first episode, it's been his nickname for his younger sister, Thea Queen.

For starters, Oliver doesn't actually call Roy "Speedy". It's a bit confusing, but in the scene you're thinking of, when he yells "Speedy" at Roy, he's yelling Thea's name at Roy to remind him of his girlfriend, and snap him out of his rage. There's also another scene where Lyla calls Barry "Speedy" but Oliver thinks she's talking about Roy, but it's clear he's confused by the nickname. As far as I know, Oliver has only ever used that nickname for his sister.

The show has done quite a lot of shuffling around with it's source material, and this is just one more instance of it. They want to tell their own story, not just copy the comic books verbatim, They want things to be familiar to those who already know the stories, but also want it to be new and interesting in some way. So, the writers they pick elements from the comic book canon that they like, but use them in whatever way makes sense.

The character of Thea Queen was invented entirely for the show, but she's basically a mash-up of the comic book Roy Harper and Mia Dearden characters. The comics Roy was a "ward" of Oliver's, which was transitioned into "sibling" since Oliver's younger in the show and his mother's still alive. Moira Queen's maiden name is Dearden, which also became Thea's middle name.

While on the team, Roy had several near-death experiences. He was shot in the chest by Brother Blood and benched for months. He then fought and nearly lost a battle with Deathstroke, and was subsequently captured by Constantine Drakon and the Riddler later on. After leading the Outsiders against the Secret Society of Super-Villains during Infinite Crisis in Metropolis, Roy found himself barely holding the team together a year later.

After an attempt to rescue Black Lightning with the help of Nightwing failed, Roy turned over leadership to Nightwing altogether. He was later asked to join the Justice League by his friend Hal Jordan. Adopting the name Red Arrow, Roy looked at this as an opportunity to put the tumultuous past with his adoptive father Oliver in the past for good. He joined the team and started a relationship with League teammate Hawkgirl. After the loss of his daughter Lian and having his arm torn off during the attack on Star City by Prometheus, Roy fell into an anger and hatred that turned him back into Arsenal, complete with a weaponized prosthetic arm.

Punishing himself and others for failing to save his daughter, Roy went down a dark path. During the New 52 age of DC Comics , there were many changes to the characters fans had known and loved for years.
